Statement on Signing of Stem Cell Research Legislation

Statement by President Richard L. McCormick on Today's Signing of Stem Cell Research Legislation

July 26, 2007

The Rutgers community applauds Gov. Jon Corzine for signing landmark legislation today to place a stem cell research bond question on November’s statewide ballot. The governor appropriately puts a decision before the people of New Jersey on an initiative that has the potential to greatly enhance their lives. If voters approve the referendum, the state will have the authority to borrow $450 million to fund stem cell research.

This initiative builds upon a foundation already put in place by Gov. Corzine and the New Jersey Legislature. With voter approval, research funds will be made available that can help realize the potential of stem cells in the development of new treatments and cures for a host of diseases, disorders and injuries.
