Search for VP for Research and Graduate Education

March 28, 2005

Members of the Rutgers Community:

I am pleased to announce that we have initiated a national search for the newly created position of Vice President for Research and Graduate Education. The vice president will oversee and serve as the advocate for the university's research activities and its graduate, postgraduate, and professional education and training programs. He or she will be responsible for strengthening existing programs, promoting new initiatives, and heightening the university's academic profile nationally and internationally.

The appointment of a new vice president provides a valuable opportunity to integrate research with graduate, postgraduate, and professional education and thereby strengthen programs in the arts and sciences and in professional fields and create higher visibility for the university nationally and internationally. Reporting to the Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs, he or she will have specific line responsibilities on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus, including oversight of the Graduate School-New Brunswick. The vice president will also have universitywide responsibility for all areas of scientific integrity in research and research compliance, including the Office of Sponsored Programs, the Institutional Review Board, and research compliance programs, as well as management of intellectual property development. Overall, the incumbent will be responsible for stimulating research collaborations; increasing extramural financial support; enhancing relationships with government agencies, private foundations, and industry; and expanding technology transfer prospects. The vice president will also be a member of the university's leadership team, serving on the President's Cabinet and the Promotion Review Committee.

Board of Governors Professor Yogesh Jaluria, of the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, has agreed to serve as chair of the search committee, which is composed of distinguished faculty from the Camden, New Brunswick/Piscataway, and Newark campuses. I look forward to receiving the committee's recommendations and ultimately to the appointment of an individual who will serve as a forceful leader to move Rutgers forward in its research and graduate education missions.

I strongly urge you to review the position announcement and nominate appropriate candidates to the search committee. The position announcement, the committee list, and a comments page are posted at http://www.president.rutgers.edu/appointments.shtml. Applications should be sent to Professor Jaluria at email. Applicants should submit a letter of interest, a current vita, and the names and addresses of at least three references. Applications and nominations will be confidential and references will be contacted only with the permission of the candidate. Sincerely,

Richard L. McCormick
President
