Members of the Rutgers Community:
Our university is graced by extraordinarily gifted and dedicated faculty members, and it is deeply gratifying when one of them is recognized for particular excellence. I know you will share my pride in the news that Professor Scott M. Glenn, a member of the School of Environmental and Biological Sciences faculty, has been named the 2010 New Jersey Professor of the Year by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education. The award recognizes professors for their outstanding impact on and involvement with undergraduate students and for their scholarly approach to teaching and learning.
Dr. Glenn is codirector of the Coastal Ocean Observation Laboratory at Rutgers’ Institute of Marine and Coastal Sciences, one of the world’s leading ocean observatories. His innovative teaching techniques, which have earned him awards from Rutgers and recognition by the National Science Foundation, have engaged Rutgers students in the exploration of the ocean and have helped them to extend their education far beyond the classroom.
Last year Professor Glenn led a team of faculty, students, and staff in guiding the historic voyage of the first submersible robot glider to cross the Atlantic ocean, a project in which undergraduates were directly involved in deploying the glider and navigating its path from New Jersey to Spain. He is committed to getting students of all ages excited about ocean exploration, and we see evidence of his success both in the great many schoolchildren who followed the glider’s voyage last year and in the exponential growth in the number of Rutgers undergraduates involved with the Coastal Ocean Observation Laboratory over the past several years.
On behalf of the entire Rutgers community, I offer Dr. Glenn our congratulations on this great honor, our admiration for his many contributions to the field of oceanography, and our thanks for his dedication to undergraduate teaching.
