Appointment of Dean, Rutgers–Camden Faculty of Arts and Sciences

Members of the Rutgers Community:

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Kriste Lindenmeyer, a professor in and chair of the history department at the University of Maryland Baltimore County (UMBC), has accepted appointment as dean of the Rutgers–Camden Faculty of Arts and Sciences. She will assume the deanship on July 11, 2011.

An effective administrator with an energetic vision of the role of the arts and sciences in building careers, advancing research, and serving communities, Dr. Lindenmeyer has sharp insight into the academic and pedagogical rigor required of successful schools. She has a truly impressive record as a research scholar, matched only by her enthusiasm for innovations in teaching.

At UMBC, Dr. Lindenmeyer currently is an Entrepreneurship Fellow. She has served as president of the university’s Faculty Senate and chair of its University Research Council. Her research focuses on childhood, public policy, and social entrepreneurship. Dr. Lindenmeyer is the author of the books The Greatest Generation Grows Up: Childhood in 1930s America and A Right to Childhood: The U.S. Children’s Bureau and Child Welfare, 1912–1946, and is the editor of the book Ordinary Women, Extraordinary Lives: Women in American History. Her work regularly appears in such academic publications as the Journal of American History and the Journal of the History of Children and Youth.

Dr. Lindenmeyer attended the University of Cincinnati, where she earned her Ph.D. in American history and her master’s and bachelor’s degrees in history.

We applaud the excellent work of the search committee, led by School of Law dean Rayman Solomon and Dr. Mary Bravo, professor of psychology. On behalf of the Rutgers community, we thank Dr. Michael Palis for his service as interim dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences. Rutgers owes him a profound debt of gratitude for his dedication and leadership.

We are confident that Dean Lindenmeyer will help the Rutgers–Camden Faculty of Arts and Sciences take its rightful place as a premier center for education and research in our region and the nation. Please join us in welcoming Kriste to Rutgers.
