Appointment of Dean of Rutgers School of Criminal Justice

April 16, 2007

Members of the Rutgers Community:

Speaking for Provost Steve Diner and myself, I am delighted to announce that we have appointed Dr. Adam Graycar, a highly distinguished criminal justice scholar and public official in Australia, as dean of the Rutgers School of Criminal Justice.  We look forward to his arrival on the Newark Campus to begin his tenure on July 1, 2007.

Dr. Graycar brings to Rutgers considerable experience in government and academia. For the past four years, he has served as head of the Cabinet Office for the government of South Australia, where he oversees and advises on a wide range of government policies and programs, and leads his state's interactions with the federal government.  From 1994 to 2003, he was director of the Australian Institute of Criminology.  He also held academic posts in social policy and political science at universities in Adelaide and Sydney.

An expert on many aspects of criminal justice and social issues, Dr. Graycar has published several books including Crime and Justice in Australia and The Cambridge Handbook of Australian Criminology.  In 1998 he was elected as a fellow of the Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia.  He holds a bachelor's degree in political science, a Ph.D. in public policy, and a doctor of letters degree in social policy, all from the University of New South Wales in Sydney.

Building on the excellent leadership of Dean Leslie Kennedy, Dr. Graycar will bring a wealth of scholarship and a unique perspective to the School of Criminal Justice. He was chosen from a pool of superb candidates for the deanship, and I thank all the members of the search committee and chair Professor Richard Langhorne for their diligence and counsel.

I am excited by the opportunities that the appointment of Dean Graycar provides for the advancement of the School of Criminal Justice and by extension the entire university, and I know you will join me in warmly welcoming Adam to the Rutgers community.
