Members of the Rutgers Community:
Chancellor Steven Diner and I are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. William L. Holzemer, a scholar of great distinction in biomedical research and international education, as Dean of Rutgers College of Nursing. He will begin at Rutgers on September 1, 2009. Dr. Lucille Joel, who has served so well as interim dean, will continue in this position until Dr. Holzemer's arrival.
William Holzemer now serves as associate dean for international programs and director of the International Center for HIV/AIDS Research at the School of Nursing at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). He also directs UCSF's World Health Organization Collaborating Center for Research and Clinical Training in Nursing. He is internationally known for his research on living well with HIV/AIDS, and recently completed two National Institutes for Health grants on the impact of the HIV stigma on the quality of care in five African nations.
Dean Holzemer, whose four degrees include a bachelor of science in nursing from San Francisco State University and a doctorate in higher education administration from Syracuse University, is a visiting professor at St. Luke's College of Nursing in Tokyo, Japan, and editor-in-chief of the Japan Journal of Nursing Science. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and an elected member of the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences.
We are extremely pleased to appoint William Holzemer to this leadership position at an exciting juncture in the College of Nursing's long history of service to the health care profession. Indeed, his appointment comes on the heels of our recent dedication of a new facility for the college on our New Brunswick campus.
A highly accomplished scholar, Dean Holzemer will be an outstanding addition to the university community and provide vision and leadership in expanding upon doctoral programs and research at the College of Nursing. Please join us in welcoming him to Rutgers.
